lowercase gallery | andrew valko

i was recently introduced to the work of andrew valko by a local gallery owner. the work is graphic, insightful and a perfect rendering of our time. the over-arching theme is voyeurism. in some works, a man watches a women who stares at us as we watch her. in others, women capure images of themselves (or is it us, the viewer?) using cell phones, web cams, polaroids and video cameras. i've pieced together some of my favourites in the lowercase gallery, and i would love to hear your feedback.
*please note that while i have chosen some of the tamer images, there is some graphic content.

exhibition opening | ted harrison

today marks the two week countdown until the ted harrison studio (where i work) closes. it's going to be a busy and bittersweet time for me. working at this gallery is probably one of my favourites jobs that i've ever had - and the main reason for this is the man himself. ted harrison is kind, generous, modest and probably the funniest and most charming person i have ever had the pleasure of knowing.

and so, despite the fact that the walls of this gallery are almost bare - i want to pay homage to this man and his artwork with another exhibition - in the lowercase gallery.

visit tedharrison.com and see prints of his work

integrate arts festival | art crawl photographs

for the last four months i have been working on the organization of a city-wide art crawl. it's an amazing event in the sense that it gives people the opportunity to visit galleries at night, for free and to feel comfortable in them surrounded by other people. so last night i raced around town trying to make it to as many galleries as i could! it was so great to meet in person those people i had only communicated with through email. it was a hectic night, but definitely an energetic and inspirational one as well. it was hard to choose what images i wanted to share from the galleries but here are some of the highlights:

aimee van drimmelen's amazing drum skin paintings at the fifty fifty arts collective

a retrospective of works by duncan regehr at the legacy art gallery

incredibly detailed ship paintings by robert mcvittie at the maritime museum of bc

wicked painted records and creepy collages at the loft gallery

a group show, including the ahhmazing meghan hildebrand at madrona gallery

encaustic works and pretty plates at the martin batchelor gallery

intriguing video installations by deirdre logue at open space

an incredible array of souvenir inspired works at pop up gallery souvenir

energetic art crawlers (the legion of awesome) and collectors choice works at winchester galleries (humboldt valley)

modern midcentury works at winchester galleries (modern)

party goers and edgy graffitti art at wolf/sheep arthouse

exhibition opening | emma nishimura

these multi-faceted works by emma nishimura are both mind boggling in their creation and ethereal in their beauty. in honour of this talented artist from toronto, canada, i am featuring her baachan’s patterns collection in the lowercase gallery.

exhibition opening | elisa mazzone

i think these works by eliza mazzone are graphic, elegant and oh so chic. works like this make curating easy! click below to see a beautiful collection of works all within the same theme.

exhibition opening | pakayla rae biehn

you may have seen these beautiful 'double exposure images by pakayla rae biehn floating around the web lately. you may even have thought they were photographs - they're not (shock! surprise!). well they've been floating around in my mind since the first time i saw them so i knew i'd have to feature them in the lowercase gallery. there is somethign very mystical and dreamlike about these beautiful paintings. they make me want to take a nap in the middle of a summer afternoon and fantasize about rolling around in a bed of pink flowers. a girl can dream right?

12.5.12

exhibition opening | meghan hildebrand

do you know what time it is? OBSESSION TIME!!!

i've always liked meghan hildebrand's artwork. i think i first saw it in "poster on canvas" format while working at a little gallery/decor shop. i thought it was hipper than much of the other canvases (which were of ducks and flowers and rocks). though at that time her work was less abstract and more representational. then i was introduced to some of her originals at madrona gallery in downtown victoria. i could see her style altering even then - in a good way! but this week i saw her newest collection.

and it's neon.

and i am in love.

and so today, the lowercase gallery is featuring the beautiful artwork of meghan hildebrand. from her newest series, "flotsam, jetsam, lagan and derelict."*

.
*take note of the titles at the end of the gallery. they ROCK.

art | wolf/sheep arthouse

not too long ago, jon and i went downtown to check out an art exhibition by wolf/sheep arthouse. it was held in an old bank building and much of the art was hung in the cement walled vaults, as you'll see below.

wolf/sheep is kind of amazing because it's a hybrid - part tattoo parlour, part gallery and part events. i've always been a little too shy to go in - mainly because it's not at street level, and despite having three tattoos i never really feel comfortable in a tattoo parlour.

but when i did finally get up the guts - i saw that the art gallery part is amazing! the artists they represent are creating edgy, hip and exciting works of art. a friend of mine argued that the show felt like a high-school art exhibition but i disagree. i think the artwork displayed was both beautiful and confrontational. it showcased the talent and uniqueness of the artists.

28.4.12

exhibition opening | ann marshall

ann marshall is on the list. my "one day when i'm rich i will buy a piece from this artist and this artist and this artist list." it's actually not that long, and only the ones that make my heart beat quick are on it - like annabelle marquis and m.a.tateishi. in terms of ann marshall's art, i want a self portrait done in photography, pastel and paper collage. i've never ever wanted a self portrait of myself so that's kind of a big deal!

for now, i honour these artists in the best way i know how. and so miss. marshall is features in the latest lowercase gallery exhibition. yes, i wrote about marshall's work here but i couldn't stop thinking about her...

p.s. just a reminder that the first tues of the month is an art crawl on isavirtue. i would Love for you to participate by sharing your favourite artist of any kind on your blog - and linking up here!

14.4.12

exhibition opening | natalie nicklin

it's time for a new exhibition! i'm not sure whether you guys ever take a peek at my little online gallery - but i kind of love doing it. researching an artist, pulling together a body of their work and then curating it and creating an aesthetic flow is something i really enjoy! i spend a lot of time really getting to know them and their artwork - by the end i feel like we're friends (except for the part where they don't even know who i am!)

for the next two weeks, the lowercase gallery will be featuring the amazing illustrative and digital collage works of natalie nicklin:

exhibition | urbanite + throw down

when i worked at kwag - we had a seasonal event called t.g.i. fridays. when i moved to victoria i discovered that the local public gallery (aggv) did a similar event entitled urbanite. it was basically the same thing - but with a serious difference - one was a program, the other a party. although t.g.i. fridays were good (crafts in a group setting with wine and a dj?), yes please), i've never been able to figure out exactly why it is that urbanite is so much more successful though. i'm talking people drinking, dancing, actually taking curatorial tours, lining up in the rain to get in successful. perhaps it's just because of the die hard arts culture here on the island. maybe alcohol plays a role - it's hard to know.

i went to the most recent urbanite and snapped some pics. i have to apologize because i had a glass of wine (that's all it takes for me!) and was a bit tipsy - so i don't really have any arty or clever explanations to go with these images. i do know that the main exhibit was throw down (which was like a crazy door prize after slogging through the stagnant, permanent emily carr exhibit).

perhaps my favourite part of the night/exhibition was this board where you were encouraged to write down the type of thing you would "throw down" for. art obviously - but someone else found more humour in the task:

interactive installations - but not that interactive!
