i was recently introduced to the work of andrew valko by a local gallery owner. the work is graphic, insightful and a perfect rendering of our time. the over-arching theme is voyeurism. in some works, a man watches a women who stares at us as we watch her. in others, women capure images of themselves (or is it us, the viewer?) using cell phones, web cams, polaroids and video cameras. i've pieced together some of my favourites in the lowercase gallery, and i would love to hear your feedback.

exhibition opening | ted harrison

today marks the two week countdown until the ted harrison studio (where i work) closes. it's going to be a busy and bittersweet time for me. working at this gallery is probably one of my favourites jobs that i've ever had - and the main reason for this is the man himself. ted harrison is kind, generous, modest and probably the funniest and most charming person i have ever had the pleasure of knowing. 

and so, despite the fact that the walls of this gallery are almost bare - i want to pay homage to this man and his artwork with another exhibition - in the lowercase gallery.

these multi-faceted works by emma nishimura are both mind boggling in their creation and ethereal in their beauty. in honour of this talented artist from toronto, canada, i am featuring her baachan’s patterns collection in the lowercase gallery.

exhibition opening | pakayla rae biehn

you may have seen these beautiful 'double exposure images by pakayla rae biehn floating around the web lately. you may even have thought they were photographs - they're not (shock! surprise!). well they've been floating around in my mind since the first time i saw them so i knew i'd have to feature them in the lowercase gallery. there is somethign very mystical and dreamlike about these beautiful paintings. they make me want to take a nap in the middle of a summer afternoon and fantasize about rolling around in a bed of pink flowers. a girl can dream right?

exhibition opening | meghan hildebrand

do you know what time it is? OBSESSION TIME!!!

i've always liked meghan hildebrand's artwork. i think i first saw it in "poster on canvas" format while working at a little gallery/decor shop. i thought it was hipper than much of the other canvases (which were of ducks and flowers and rocks). though at that time her work was less abstract and more representational. then i was introduced to some of her originals at madrona gallery in downtown victoria. i could see her style altering even then - in a good way! but this week i saw her newest collection.

and it's neon.

and i am in love.

and so today, the lowercase gallery is featuring the beautiful artwork of meghan hildebrand. from her newest series, "flotsam, jetsam, lagan and derelict."*

exhibition opening | ann marshall

ann marshall is on the list. my "one day when i'm rich i will buy a piece from this artist and this artist and this artist list." it's actually not that long, and only the ones that make my heart beat quick are on it - like annabelle marquis and m.a.tateishi. in terms of ann marshall's art, i want a self portrait done in photography, pastel and paper collage. i've never ever wanted a self portrait of myself so that's kind of a big deal!

for now, i honour these artists in the best way i know how. and so miss. marshall is features in the latest lowercase gallery exhibition. yes, i wrote about marshall's work here but i couldn't stop thinking about her...

exhibition opening | maya hayuk

i think i first came across maya hayuk when i was working with sonya on her friendship bracelet section of my make art a part (of your life) e-course. i googled the term, and landed amidst the colourful world of maya - who entitled two of her paintings "friendship bracelet..."

her work has always been in the back of my mind and i'm happy to finally be feature her in my online gallery space - "lowercase."

i'm very excited about the latest exhibition opening in lowercase gallery! i'm going through one of those obsessive phases where i can't stop thinking about a certain artist and his or her creations. it's kind of like when you have a song stuck in your head and you think that maybe the only way to get it out is to keep listening to it!

mary anne tateishi creates exquisite panels full of colour and energy - i hope they brighten your day as they do mine!

i'm very excited about the new exhibition in lowercase gallery! i worked with sara mcintosh-robichaud a couple of years ago in victoria where we hung her art for a masters in fine arts show. her work was some of the strongest in that show and so it doesn't surprise me that sara is really making a name for herself both across canada and in california. there's definitely some pieces that are on my "future to buy" list. so check it out and enjoy before it's gone!

lowercase gallery is an online exhibition space in which i curate collections of inspiring artwork. the gallery is designed in such a way that visitors will feel as if they are walking through, admiring art on the walls. new art in the gallery will be installed bi-weekly. i encourage you visit often, and to share current exhibitions with your friends and followers.

lowercase references my penchant for lowercase letters. but more importantly, art is lowercase. in my world, there is no such thing as "Art." art does not have to be high brow, discriminating, confusing or alienating. in my work, i encounter people who are frightened of art, claim to know nothing about it, and even refuse to enter a gallery. well, you can enter this gallery! there is no judgements here, no sales pressure and you are not expected to find a deeper meaning if you don't want to. the only intentions this gallery has are to inspire you, fascinate you, and beautify your world.
