feature art friday | janice colbert

when my parents were in town visiting, i took them to a bunch of my favourite local galleries. at one of them i fell in love with a piece called "no geography without stars" by janice colbert.* colbert is canadian and in this series she paints geometric shapes onto wood board. her bio states that her work is non representational (obviously) and builds on her years working as a fashion designer.

my favourite aspect of these pieces is the way in which she lets the wood come through the paint. together the two mediums create a sense of playfulness with a raw edge. it reminds me of an artist i worked with once when i was installing an mfa exhibition. sara robichaud also let the raw canvas play a role in her paintings and i remember being drawn in the same way at that time.

* it's a real shame stephen colbert has tainted this last name for artists janice colbert and gregory colbert. i can never really say it without laughing...

  3. These are beautiful. I love the use of quilt patterns for inspiration, the color, the flow of the wood through the piece...very appealing and interesting to my eyes. Thank you for sharing this.
