how to | a sock bun

why hello! did you shower yesterday? excellent. but you don't feel like showering today? that's totally okay - i understand! but your hair is probably looking a little blah - that means it's time to pull out "the sock bun." all you'll require is some socks, and some hair*. oh, you already have those? well how convenient! follow along with me below:

part one |

step one | choose some socks that you can live without (on your feet anyways...). i use my husband's socks because they are bigger, bulkier and i have what could be considered big, bulky hair.

step two | you may need two socks, let's play it by ear shall we?

step three | begin by rolling the top of the sock down - as tightly as possible.

step four | keep rolling! and while you do, tuck your fingers under your donut and pull the bottom of the sock with your other hand. this tightens the roll.

step five | when you get to the toe part, cut it off! (if you don't, this isn't likely to work very well).

step six | congratulate yourself - you just destroyed repurposed a sock!

if it's not big enough for your hair, repeat the above steps. the donut you see in the first image has three socks rolled in!

part two |

step one | tie your hair in a ponytail. i find a tight, high tail holds the weight better but do what feels right for your sock donut. if you have bangs, pin them back however you like. if you are feeling frisky, you could go all out and put a bump it in!

step two | slide the donut over your pony tail and begin pulling the hair through

step three | ta da! all done! looks nice doesn't it? just tricking, let's move on.

step four-five | lean your head completely forward and use your fingers to pull the hair evenly over the donut. try to cover it completely.

step six-seven | this is the tricky part but with your head tilted forward, take your weapons of choice (see bobby pins above) and start pinning the hair down just underneath the donut. if you have longer hair like me, you'll need to 'swoop' it around the donut before pinning into place. use the flat bottomed bobbies to make your first pinnings, and then use the prong bobbies to hold the other sections in place at the bottom.

step eight | this is not really a step - you are done, voila! add some fun bobby pins or big bows for decoration!

* you'll need at least shoulder length hair. just past shoulder length is best. but if you are like me and have quite long hair - it still works!

Sweet idea! Now, to find some "spare" socks...

Im in the military and wear my hair like this on a daily basis. if you have a hard time "Swooping" your hair to pin it, try wrapping a hair band around your hair covered donut. It keeps the hair in place and then you can twist your hair around the edges of the sock, pinning as you go.

I am likewise in the military and do the same thing with the hair tie. The hardest part though is to keep your hair (that is all nicely brushed out and covering the sock or the mesh donut that us lazy people bought at the store) from moving when you pull the hair tie over it. However, it definitely holds it tighter!

I like the idea of using the hair band then pin. Mine turned out great!

I have extremely thin hair and i'm still able to pull it off. you just have to try a thinner sock and strategic hair placement. my hair is blond so i tried a thin nude sock so it blends better and it comes out nicely still!

I have VERY THIN almost waist length hair and tried it with 3 socks, teased my hair to make it "fluffier" & it looks GREAT. My scalp is bald in spots above the crown but I adjusted the ponytail higher and no bald spots and the style looks really nice!!!! Thanks for sharing.

Yes i agree ^ my ia also very thin. Hairdressers say its very hard on ur hair to pull it up in hairties when wet...so i usually put some moose in mine and blow dry it...then pull it back into my sock bun. I also got the mesh donut for just a few $ at claire's that matches my hair color to help w gaps. The dry hair covers better and the moose holds it in place better!!!

I too have thin blonde hair and I used a dress sock in a nude/blondish color and it looks great! I also sometimes do it by pulling my hair through the sock and pulling the sock towards the end of the pony tail, spreading the hair around and rolling it so my hair is rolled around the sock, roll it all the way to my scalp adjusting my hair as I go, so it's not just one layer of hair covering the sock. Bonus, it's secure enough to not require pinning.

I'm in the thin hair crowd also, and I recently learned a trick for places where your scalp shows in a hairdo. There are now dry shampoos that have coloring in them. Just spray a small amount on the spot, and it's no longer bald! (It's kinda like that infomercial in 10 Things I Hate About You, only it works)

  10. Great tutorial. I'm going to try this tomorrow, since I have no plans to wash my hair.

  11. I found this on Pinterest as well. Can't wait to try it! My hair is kinda thin, so this should help make my buns look a little fuller. Thanks for the great pics. :)

I've come from Pinterest, too! I am also prior military, and wore my hair like this all the time. I have very thin, blonde hair. I could never hide the sock enough for it be acceptable. I finally found this.. thing that they sell at Claire's. It feels just like a dish scrubby, but it's wrapped up like a sock would be for a sock bun. It was awesome! They sell them in blonde so it was easy to hide! Thanks for the great tutorial! Looks a lot more classy than my gelled-to-high-heavens military sock bun!

I love this idea and I've tried it the other way (where you roll the hair around the sock from the bottom up) however, I think this one looks a little nicer but just from the pictures I'm having a hard time figuring out how to get it swooped so nicely to finish it. Anyone have some advice?

    1. honestly it's not too hard! you just grab a chunk near the bottom and tip your head to the side...gather a bit more hair as you swoop it around and pin it in place. then keep grabbing hair into the swoosh and keep pinning it until you get back to the beginning. admittedly i sometimes end up with not enough hair at the end to cover the sock. it just takes practice.

i can understand why a lot of military women use the hair tie - it's simple and tighter but i much prefer the look of pins!

    1. oh i'm so pleased to hear that it worked out well for you! funnily enough, this is my go to hairstyle on lazy days! which can be quite often...lol. it sounds wrong but it takes so long to wash, blowdry and curl my hair under and it only take me 5 mins to do this sock donut bun!

  20. do you ever worry about your hair coming loose and then the sock being visable on the back of your head?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. i don't worry about it too much! i usually have enough pins in there that it doesn't show itself too often. that being said...i ALWAYS keep bobby pins on me for 'emergencies', lol

  21. i do this, but instead of swooping hair around the sock, i put the donut through the tip of the ponytail, then start rolling it toward my head, wrapping and twisting the ponytail as i go. it holds tight, and you need less bobbypins to hold it in. And you get nice waves later :)

    1. yes!! i started doing that way recently as well! it's a nice change because there is certainly less pins and you can even sleep on it or lie down in the middle of the day!

  23. Between steps 5&6, you should take an elastic and put it over the hair after you hand spread it over the donut to hold it there before pinning the ends. Makes it much easier

  26. I am prior military too (like 10 years ago) and I would do the same thing.... I used my old dress socks (black) when my hair was dark, but when I first joined, and in basic.. my hair was blonde (dyed of course) and shoulder length. I used a pair of nude nylons and made a donut from those! NOBODY else was doing it back then though it seemed! I would also use another hair elastic to secure my fake bun over the donut since it was too short to wrap my hair. Then a few bobby pins here or there and ready to go. I still do this on my lazy hair days

I had a hard time figuring out the "swooping" part. So I just used the hair tie over the bun. PS winter socks are amazing. I wonder what my husband is going to do when he comes home and finds out I used one of his.

IS your hair layered? I can't decide if I'm just really UN-coordinated or if it's because of my layers i can't make this work. I have pretty long hair, my shortest layer is at my shoulder but I still can't keep from having stray chunks falling out all day. Can't put enough bobby pins in to keep it up.

    1. although my hair is long, it is definitely layered!
i twist little chunks of hair around each other before pinning them down and i find that keeps the layers in check!
